People can treat dry skin using several methods. The best treatment option will depend on the cause of a person’s dry skin and its severity. Treatments also vary for different skin types, which can be normal, dry, oily, or combination.

If you’ve got dry skin, you can dramatically enhance it overnight by taking those steps:

3 Tips to Cure Dry Skin Overnight

Use a gentle, non-foaming cleanser

You need to have a skincare routine formulated for your specific type and problem. Start by cleansing your skin to completely remove dirt, toxins, and makeup from your skin every day. However, many cleaners can exacerbate dry skin, especially if they contain sulfates such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). If you have dry skin, you should use a sulfate-free cleanser so you don’t dry out your skin.

Use a face oil

Gently dry your skin after washing your face. Immediately apply the intensive face oil. If you don’t have facial oil, olive oil from your kitchen will also help in a pinch. Dry skin is free of sebum and the only way to restore it is to put the oil back into your skin. Facial oils are designed to do just that.

Use a thick moisturizer

Moisturizing overnight can provide additional benefits. After applying the face oil, follow with a richer, more viscous moisturizer, perhaps with shea butter or ceramides. Don’t worry about massaging it completely. It is normal for there to be a layer of lotion on the skin. You may want to sleep with a towel over your pillow to protect the sheets.

  • washing the face daily with a gentle cleanser
  • wearing sunscreen every day
  • applying moisturizer after bathing or washing the face
  • using warm, not hot, water when washing the face and bathing
  • staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • limiting caffeine intake
  • limiting time in direct sunlight
  • avoiding artificial tanning
  • using a humidifier
  • quitting smoking, if necessary

If dry skin does not improve or worsen, a person can see their doctor or dermatologist. People with dry skin that does not respond to over-the-counter treatments or home remedies may benefit from using a prescribed cream or ointment.
